The Southern Field (The Very Top Field)

Our southern field, which is the highest ground on the small holding is used as the winter grazing field for the horses, we refer to this field as the “very top field”.

This is a long narrow field, which until a couple of years ago was part of the adjoining field, but a decision was made to sub-divide area into two fields. The reason was that the quality of the grass and hay was declining and unfortunately it was going to be difficult to improved the grass without allowing the Sheep to graze the fields – Sheep are great for grass management! However due to the footpaths crossing the field and the walkers with their dogs it would not be realistic to put the sheep into the field.

So we made the decision to split the field into two, with the main part of the footpaths in the new southern field.

To help segrigate dog walkers away from where the sheep can graze we have included a fenced lane that connects to the footpath and the stile through the hedge. We do ask that all dog walkers keep the dogs on a lead as they come into the fields as they may find the horses grazing in the fields and occasionally they do go into the fenced lane area to graze the grass and parts of the hedge.
