With the recent good weather we have been busy cutting and baling the hay which we use for the winter feed for the animals.

When it comes to Hay Season it is a high stress period as we constantly start watching the weather forecasts and looking at what the possibility of rain will be. However this year has given us a good steady period of good weather.
However the down side has been that the dry period earlier in the year has meant that the grass has not grown and thickened. What does this mean? Well basically it means that we have not got the same quantity of hay that we normally get.
The Hay Making process normally takes a 4-7 day period depending on the weather and temperature. The idea is to cut the grass and then to have it spread out to help with the drying process. Once it has been spread out then needs to be turned regularly to help with that drying process.
Once it is suitably dry it is then put into rows to aid with the baling process. We bale into round bales as they are easier to move and store for us.

The hay that we produce is used as winter fodder for our Sheep, Goats and Horses and as such it is a vital crop for us to get done, baled and then stored.
