The West Field

The West Field

This field has a foot path passing through it and is used as one of our main hay fields.

Hay is a vital crop for us as it provides the fodder (feed) for our sheep and horses through the winter. By getting the most out of this fields means that we are a good way towards being self sufficient for the winter period.

The West field does have a problem with the hedges encroaching and as such they do need to be pushed back to their original lines. Also currently the perimeter fences are not upto standard to keep the livestock in.

Over the next couple of years we plan to have a programme of works to start to manage the hedges of the field and also to upgrade/ replace the field fences. The work on the hedges are likely to be done over a couple of years as we will be focusing on some of the worst ones first.

To help improve the quality of the grass we will need to start to graze the fields with both the horses during the spring and then sheep during the late summer and Autumn, but this will be occurring once the hedges and fields fences have been upgraded/ repaired.

We also have another issue that effects the field and that is in the South East corner next to the stile there is a wet area that appears during the winter period. This is caused by a water spring that migrates across our fields. This is due to a layer of shale below the clay soil and sub soil. During the summer this spring/ wet area can be found in the adjoining eastern fields.
