A Busy August

A Busy August

Its been a busy month for us here on the farm.

The weather has remained dry but that has meant we have yet again had to delay the muck spreading. The reason being is that without rain the muck will not breakdown and release the nutrients into the soil, also with the soil baked hard there is a lack of worm activity on or near the surface.

However there has been plenty of other jobs to get on with such as fixing fences, which is a constant task and also checking the electric fencing that we have out round the farm.

The good weather has also allowed for the sheep fleece that we sheered back in May to be washed, cleaned and to be “hand fluffed”. We uses the fleece for various craft projects and in particular for felting.

Tied in with that Anne was kept busy with preparing for a craft fayre at Swarkestone Garden Centre. This was a first outing for her line in wool filled dog beds and dog toys, more information on these can be seen on her website –

There has also been the regular task of checking the footpath styles and making sure that the access is not blocked or obstructed. this is a particular problem at this time of the year as the Brambles and blackthorn are particularly thick. so there has been plenty of trimming back. One of the things to remember with this is that I can only do light trimming and cutting at the moment as the Bramble and Blackthorn is part of the hedge row and we can only cut the hedges after the end of September.

We also don’t want to cut the hedges until after the birds have managed get as much of the berries and hedge fruit as possible as it is an important part of their diet at this time of the year. but it doesn’t stop the sheep, alpacas and meg the mule from eating them back – but only in areas of their choosing which currently seems to be under the oak trees.
